Frequently Asked Questions

The Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC) is the state regulatory body governing all cannabis activities.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the documentation issued by a licensed testing facility as proof that a product has undergone the BCC required tests to ensure its safety.

Only licensed growers, extractors, manufacturers, and distributors may be issued a Certificate of Analysis.

For California Compliance testing, Earth Labs is required to perform onsite sampling of the product in order to ensure a representative sample is obtained for testing. Please call for a convenient appointment time.

  • Growers- they need their flower tested to ensure that it is safe not only for direct consumption but also for sale to extractors.
  • Extractors- they need their extracts tested to ensure that it is safe not only for direct consumption but also for sale to manufacturers.
  • Manufactures- they need their manufactured products (IE. Gummy bears, cannabis cookies) to be tested to ensure that they are safe for direct consumption.
  • Distributors- they need their inventory tested to ensure that it is safe for consumption.

R&D tests are not reported to the state of California. If a sample fails R&D testing the client has a chance to remedy the product and retest before requesting CA Compliance testing. If a sample fails CA Compliance testing, we are required by law to report the failure to the state of California and the client may be required to destroy their product. This is a great selling point to make to your clients- ensure that they understand the difference between R&D and compliance testing. Stress the point that it is wise to request full panel R&D testing before requesting COA testing. This way if their product fails, the state is not notified of the failure and the client can remedy their product and retest. Additionally, samples for R&D testing may be directly dropped off by the client. Samples for CA Compliance testing must be collected on the client’s site by a trained Earth Labs sampler.

Inhalable cannabis is defined as the flower (or bud) that is harvested directly from the cannabis plant.

Inhalable cannabis products are defined as vape cartridges, pre-rolls (IE. Joints), etc.

Other cannabis & cannabis products are defined as anything else that is not the natural flower or any other type of inhalable product (such as vape cartridges or joints). Examples of these products include edibles such as cannabis cookies and cannabis infused gummy bears along with topicals.

No. According to the BCC regulations, the maximum harvest batch size is 50 pounds. A harvest of 100 pounds would need to be divided into two 50-pound batches with each batch requiring a separate Certificate of Analysis.
